Are You Afraid Of Singing In Front Of people?

Too Scared to Lead Singing? Try These 3 Simple Tricks

If leading a room full of people in song sounds like death to you—you’re not alone. But it doesn’t have to be terrifying. Here are three quick mindset shifts that can help you feel more comfortable (and maybe even enjoy it):

1. Make simple eye contact and smile. You don’t have to lock eyes like a motivational speaker. Just every once in a while, glance at someone and give them a warm, natural smile. That tiny gesture reminds everyone—including you—that you’re all just humans sharing a moment.

2. Focus on the words, not the crowd. It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure of leading. But shift your attention from yourself to the meaning of the lyrics. Think of the words like a message you're delivering—not a performance you're giving. For example, right now instead of thinking “I’m singing to a camera,” I’m simply thinking:

Some glad morning, when this life is over…I’ll fly away…

This shift in attention is more authentic, as it honors the focal point of everyone's mind (the lyrics, the song) and is shift you away from being distracted by needless things like fear of man and insecurity.

3. Remember: adults are just tall toddlers.Seriously. Whether it’s a room full of kids or grownups, people respond to clear direction, genuine energy, and a little bit of fun. You don’t need to impress anyone. Just invite them to join you.

Like this:

Sing with me now…I’ll fly away, oh glory…

To see how this works in a church setting, here’s an example from a hymnal I’m putting together. (You can download a free sample at jeredmckenna.com)
